Three different masterpieces on stage:
One musical: Death and The Maiden” String quartet no.14 in D minor by Franz Schubert. One physical: The human being in all its excellence. One spiritual-philosophical: The mystery of our end and its continual watching over us. Our thoughts go back to human existence and to what defines it: life and death. The beginning and the end are the miracles of our existence as is the impermanence of our being, with its constantly mutating forms. This movement from one form to another is related to dance: bearer of such a task and in itself dangling images in front of us that continually appear and disappear. For this reason, we have pondered on what could be defined as a “twilight zone” in dance, intentionally caught in the exact moment of impermanence and transience, an example of written music aspiring to the infinite and accompanying the listener beyond a rational idea, towards the unknown and the transcendent. We have tried to comprehend and open up, like surgeons, the body of this writing in order to explore its gaps, its hollow spaces.
More than ever this time, composing has been like an eternal falling, an escape from every end and every sense. (Michele Abbondanza, Antonella Bertoni).
Michele Abbondanza (co-founder of the Sosta Palmizi group and teacher at the "Piccolo di Milano" Drama school) and Antonella Bertoni founded their own Company “Abbondanza/Bertoni" following their experience in the Alwin Nikolais’ school in New York, their studies with Dominique Dupuy, the poetic improvisations by Carolyn Carlson in France and their study and practice of Zen. This company is renowned as one of the most prolific dance theatre companies of the Italian scene for their productions, their teaching and pedagogical activities as well as for the diffusion of contemporary Dance Theatre.
Their dance is a private one, mirroring the alterations we found within a couple. So much belongs to their being together on stage: a certain quality in their movement as though in conversation in which you can feel a tangible cosiness within the bodies of one and the other. There is a consenting awareness in their movements; you can experience a dialogue of encounters and clashes within thoughts and physicality not only in their artistic work. (Francesca Pedroni)
