Sport by Salvo Lombardo is the third chapter of the trilogy L’esemplare capovolto, which the choreographer has been working on with his company Chiasma since 2018: it consists in rewriting three historic works of the Italian academic dance repertoire of the late 1800s that choreographer Luigi Manzotti created for Milan’s Teatro alla Scala. In Sport the “fall” is seen by the choreographer as a specific existential dimension, an “epiphany of our unkind, weary and brutalised present” and at the same time a pretext to rearrange the ideals of competition and performance, which are normally based on principles of exclusion and compliance with specific anatomical, social, behavioural and cultural norms.
Biography
Salvo Lombardo is a performer, choreographer, multimedia artist and curator of performance projects. Since 2016 he has been the artistic director of the Chiasma Company. He is currently associate artist of the MILANoLTRE Festival and Lavanderia a Vapore. His works and research projects have featured the collaboration of many festivals, theatres, museums and independent spaces in Italy and abroad. In 2017-2018 he was associate artist at the Oriente Occidente Festival. From 2019 to 2022 he was the co-curator of the Resurface Festival (Rome) and Interazioni – Festival (Rome). In 2021/2022 he was one of the artists selected for the European project MMDD_Micro and Macro Dramaturgies in Dance. In 2021 he was selected as an artist by the BeSpectActive European network. In 2022 he was one of the artists of the project May Town in Zetkin Parl of the Schaubühne Lindenfels Leipzig, Germany. In 2023 he worked on the research project Laboratorio Excelsior of the Department of Humanities of Turin University.
